The central idea of this course is that for clean, sustainable transportation systems to be successful, they need to meet people’s needs and be easy to use. In this course students increase your awareness of common urban mobility problems; understand how key transport modes can be improved for people in urban areas; understanding how things could be different in your urban area and how to make it happen. Students have understood the potential capabilities of automated vehicles, and will get to apply that knowledge to typical town planning challenges. Mobility requirements, general acceptance of new urban planning policies and transport systems, and other key obstacles will be explored.
The course focuses on how the planning and design of the built environment, transport infrastructure and uses of new technologies can in short and long perspectives enhance sustainable urban mobility transitions. A particular focus is on the relationship between different infrastructures, systems, user needs and practices, as well as governance challenges and the handling of goal conflicts in the transition process.
